Chemical Reaction Protocol

Purpose: To ensure the safety and well-being of guests and stylists in the event of a negative chemical reaction to bleach, such as scalp irritation, breakage, or unusual hair discoloration.

Indications : Smoking from foil, Guest feedback, Noticeable heat from touch

Procedure:

  1. Immediate Action:

    • Stop the process immediately: Rinse the hair thoroughly with cool water for at least 15 minutes to remove the bleach.

    • Assess the reaction: Identify the type of reaction (e.g., burning sensation, excessive breakage, unexpected color change, scalp irritation).

  2. Guest Care:

    • Scalp Irritation/Burning: Apply a cool compress to the affected area. If irritation persists, offer over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream.

    • Breakage: Gently towel-dry the hair. Avoid brushing or combing to prevent further damage.

    • Allergic Reaction: If signs of an allergic reaction are present (e.g., difficulty breathing, swelling), call 911 immediately.

  3. Documentation and Communication:

    • Incident Report: Complete a detailed incident report including:

      • Guest's name and contact information

      • Date and time of the incident

      • Products used (including batch numbers if available)

      • Description of the reaction

      • Steps taken to address the reaction

      • Guest's condition at the time they left the salon

    • Communicate with the guest: Explain the situation honestly and empathetically. Offer solutions where possible (e.g., complimentary deep conditioning treatments, future discounts).

    • Consult Manager: Discuss the incident and determine the best course of action for the guest's follow-up care.

  4. Follow-up:

    • Check on the guest: Contact the guest within 24 hours to check on their condition and offer further assistance if needed.

Prevention:

  • Thorough Consultations: Conduct detailed consultations before each chemical service, including questions about allergies, sensitivities, and previous hair treatments.

  • Strand Tests: Perform a strand test before applying bleach, especially on new guests or when using a new product.

  • Product Knowledge: Ensure stylists are well-trained on the proper use and potential risks of all chemical products.

  • Follow Manufacturer Instructions: Adhere strictly to manufacturer instructions for mixing, application, and processing times.

  • Maintain Product Quality: Store and handle bleach products according to manufacturer recommendations.
